The Messianic Journey

The Messianic JourneyThe Messianic JourneyThe Messianic Journey

In Jerusalem at the Western Wall on May 8, 2018, Marcia Berkowitz and Thom Berkowitz participated in a significant gathering of the Jewish community, highlighting the ongoing discussions about Messianic beliefs, which have even drawn the attention of public figures like Tom Arnold.

How The Journey Began

The picture above was taken at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem on May 8, 2018. During this time in Jerusalem, Marcia Berkowitz had a thought that they should start a non-profit teaching ministry. At that moment, Thom Berkowitz was the Teaching Director of an interdenominational Bible study that attracted over 500 people who delved into God’s word for 30 weeks each year. They wrestled with Marcia’s thought, questioning if it was truly from the Lord and how they could balance it without compromising the quality of the current study. Over the years, the idea of launching a non-profit teaching ministry kept resurfacing for Marcia, and she became increasingly convinced that it was the Lord who was placing this vision in her heart. In the summer of 2023, it became evident that the Lord was calling them to start 'The Messianic Journey'. The mission is to teach the Bible through Jewish eyes in the context it is written. In September 2023, they began the formal process of applying for a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and received a determination letter of acceptance from the IRS on November 20, 2023. Truly, the hand of God was at work. With everything finalized and approved, The Messianic Journey was born.

Family history, including his grandfather’s experiences in Russia, led Thom Berkowitz to believe that Christians were enemies of the Jewish people. The death of his father and a traumatic experience at a synagogue pushed Thom away from God, and his life became centered around the pursuit of wealth and power, which ultimately resulted in emptiness. However, Thom’s perspective shifted when his friend, Marcia Berkowitz, became a follower of Jesus. Curious about his friend’s new faith, Thom decided to read the Bible for himself. To his surprise, he discovered that the New Testament is a profoundly Jewish book, written by Jewish authors about the Jewish Messiah. Marcia Berkowitz was born and raised in a Christian home and has always believed that Jesus is the Messiah. She married Thom Berkowitz, a Jew who did not initially believe in Jesus, which led her life down a path she had never anticipated. Through the witness of her family and Thom’s closest friend, he eventually came to faith in Jesus, and together they committed to raise their family to know Jesus as their Messiah while also embracing their Jewish heritage. Over the years, they were mentored by many gifted teachers who presented the Bible from a Hebraic perspective, and they have led Bible studies for over 40 years. In 1995, they joined an interdenominational study called Community Bible Study, where they became small group leaders until Thom was invited to serve as the Teaching Director. Marcia assumed the role of Senior Leader, responsible for training, educating, shepherding, facilitating, and organizing retreats and social events for leaders. For 24 years, Marcia and Thom led CBS, during which time more than 500 people attended each year. Additionally, in the last 11 years with CBS, they served as Ambassadors to Israel, initiating classes that brought together Jews and Arabs. Eventually, Marcia felt the Lord was calling them away from CBS to start The Messianic Journey, where they could leverage their gifts and experiences to teach the Bible from a Jewish perspective in the context it was originally written.
